Java, Hardware, and Summer Fun

Random stuff this week:

-Java Haus, Hall Council's second-biggest event of the year, was Tuesday. After a rough start, it went smoothly, with lots of energy and talent, especially in the second show. With everything from Pink Floyd to Brazilian children's songs to juggling cigar boxes, the word 'variety' certainly applied. Delightful.
-Something on our floor is mysteriously making random pieces of hardware freak out. Of course, I am the go-to girl in the building to fix anything with a processor, so when one girl's CD drive refuses to spin down, even when empty, or another girl's wireless keyboard and mouse stop working, of course I can fix them. Alas, no.
-Summer plans are coming together! Kristen & I are making big plans for our apartment we will live in in less than a month. Very fun. It will be a simple summer as living arrangements go, but certainly an adventure. I look forward to it.
After June 10.

Just to see you smile

So, I thought I'd share some of the funny things that I have found lately online.

And you thought gophers on the golf course were bad
Frog legs, anyone?
"What time is it?" should not be a hard question

Enjoy and have a good week!!

From None to Two

So, it all began in February...well actually before that, but February the 10th is a good place to start. I went to a job fair with my roommate and others from Taylor and handed out my resume to a few companies. I was looking for a summer internship having something to do with computers. I received a warm welcome from Ontario Systems and was told to look for them on campus in a few weeks for an interview. On the 22nd on the month, I had my interview here on campus. Things seemed to be going well- I got an e-mail asking for a bit more information and permission for a background check.

But then the wait. I called to check in a few times and was finally told to expect an answer the week on April 11th. That day, I received an e-mail saying that their search had led them to other candidates. I took it well, though it was my first choice for summer jobs. The next day, I received a phone call informing me about another different opening than the one I interviewed for. I called back on the 15th and found out that they had an internship that sounded like something I would like.

I received a call from a guy who knew more about the job today. He explained that there were actually two jobs that they have open as of right now. One is working more with customers and the other is with programming and web design. He said I should call HR when I decide which one I want so that they can start the needed process for the summer. I was in shock! They are offering me TWO jobs and I get to pick which I want! This is the craziest thing. I wasn't expecting any job offer from them. Thank you, God!

Now my only problem is which one to select...

Java Haus is coming up! Just a few days! we'll see how this goes...

Hu's on firs... in China

Days till HHGTTG movie comes out: 8
Shamelessly stealing this from my other team blog:
George: Condi! Nice to see you. What's happening?

Condi: Sir, I have the report here about the new leader of China.

George: Great. Lay it on me.

Condi: Hu is the new leader of China.

George: That's what I want to know.

Condi: That's what I'm telling you.

George: That's what I'm asking you. Who is the new
leader of China?

Condi: Yes.

George: I mean the fellow's name.

Condi: Hu.

George: The guy in China.

Condi: Hu.

George: The new leader of China.

Condi: Hu.

George: The main man in China!

Con di: Hu is leading China.

George: Now whaddya' asking me for?

Condi: I'm telling you, Hu is leading China.

George: Well, I'm asking you. Who is leading China?

Condi: That's the man's name.

George: That's who's name?

Condi: Yes.

George: Will you, or will you not, tell me the name
of the new leader of China?

Condi: Yes, sir.

George: Yassir? Yassir Arafat is in China? I thought
he's dead in the Middle East.

Condi: That's correct.

George: Then who is in China?

Condi: Yes, sir.

George: Yassir is in China?

Condi: No, sir.

George: Then who is?

Condi: Yes, sir.

George: Yassir?

Condi: No, sir.

George: Look Condi. I need to know the name of the
new leader of China. Get me the Secretary General
of the U.N. on the phone.

Condi: Kofi?

George: No, thanks.

Condi: You want Kofi?

George: No.

Condi: You don't want Kofi?

George: No. But now that you mention it, I could use
a glass of milk. And then get me the U.N.

Condi: Yes, sir.

George: Not Yassir! The guy at the U.N.

Condi: Kofi?

George: Milk! Will you please make the call?

Condi: And call who?

George: Who is the guy at the U.N?

Condi: Hu is the guy in China.

George: Will you stay out of China!!!

Condi: Yes, sir.

George: And stay out of the Middle East! Just get
me the guy at the U.N.

Condi: Kofi.

George: All right! With cream and two sugars. Now

Major Decision

"My name is Kristen and I am a computer science major." "Oh really?! What do you plan on doing with that?" "Absolutely nothing. I want to be a teen counselor." "Then why is that your major?"

That is a good question. Since last year the answer has been that I will major in comp. sci. and get a job on graduation. With the money I make, I will be able to support myself and have money to get a masters in psychology and then find a counseling job. But now I'm slowing beginning not to care about my computer classes; that is not what I want to end up doing.

This leaves me in the place I am in now; considering changing my major to psychology systems with a comp. sci. minor. I have no clue what I will end up doing, but this is a major choice that I now am facing in my life.

P.S. the apparent pun was not originally intended.

Heavy Heart

This is a list of people somewhat connected to me that have died in the last couple weeks. My heart is heavy. I didn't know any of them very well, and some not at all, but their lives affected either mine or affected lives I care about, and it is hard to watch people I care about mourn.

I guess it's making me realize my own mortality too- only one of these people was over the age of 26, and even he was only 55, not 'old'.

I also wonder what God is preparing me for- often, I've found, when I experience something somewhat removed from a situation, it means that God is preparing my heart to experience it in a much more personal way- kind of getting me used to the idea, and giving me resources to pull through.
In this case, I hope not.

Busy, busy, dreadfully busy

Recap of the day: wake at 7 to shower, small group at 8, leave around 9:15 to go to Indy for interviews for summer internship. While there, I scrape the side of my friend's car I'm borrowing, have interviewers who don't take me seriously and enjoy some traffic of Indy. head back at 3 and stop to get pictures developed from spring break, killing the hour for developing looking at a great car that I want but my parents won't let me buy (don't get me started with all of that). get back to TU at 6, dinner with some of the spring break team from 6:20-7, visit at an open house for an hour, comp sci meeting from 8-8:30 and now homework well past 2am.

Yeah, it's been busy, stressful, and very tiring. I just need a restful weekend...ha, yeah right...not going to happen. Hope your day was better than mine.

'Sometimes Food'

This will be quick. Check out this article about the descruction of a childhood icon. Well, maybe not that dramatic, but, Cookie Monster eating fewer cookies?! What is America coming to?! I suppose the childhood obesity problem is more important than Sesame Street tradition, but, really...
from the article:
My beloved blue, furry monster — who sang “C is for cookie, that’s good enough for me” — is now advocating eating healthy. There’s even a new song — “A Cookie Is a Sometimes Food,” where Cookie Monster learns there are “anytime” foods and “sometimes” foods.

“Sacrilege!” I cried. “That’s akin to Oscar the Grouch being nice and clean.” (Co-workers gave me strange looks. But I didn’t care.)

Snuffleupagus was my favorite anyway.
